Artists Bio : Martin Finnin

Martin Finnin

Martin Finnin, born in Limerick in 1968, now lives & works in Cork. His paintings are full of vigour, poetic feeling and confidence. His recent paintings are true abstractions, in that while based on elements of the material world, they float above concerns such as the representation of landscape or figure. Colour and its ability to convey or reflect feeling, is the most important element in these works.

Martin Finnin has the rare ability to express his subconcious in paint. His work seems at first spontanious with simple shapes, but the balance of his compositions and the sophistication of his use of colour, texture and shape show that his work is that of a thoughtful artist with an educated eye. His work has evolved over the years. The colours have become more interesting and the activity within the painting calmer. Martin Finnin has always been very dedicated to painting and still works hard.

Between January 2005 and March 2007 he had seven solo shows. He uses oil paint in his studio in Cork, but when travelling he uses acrylic and watercolour paints which he makes himself. Finnin takes some inspiration from Brancusi, Giacometti, William Orpen, Turner and Rembrandt. Finnin is interested in doing more painting in the future, and also wishes to do some more work with bronze . He intends to return to Italy where he first worked with bronze in 2004.
