Artists Bio : Tony Gunning

Tony Gunning was born and reared in Dublin. An Irish artist with an international outlook his late entry to the artistic profession has striking parallels with Tony O’Malley. Both came from a Public Service background and entered the profession at the same age without formal training.

Since his professional debut in 2002 as a finalist on RTE’s Open House Art Competition Tony has had four solo exhibitions and has exhibited at numerous group shows throughout Ireland. His work has been selected for prestigious juried shows such as Iontas, Éigse and R.H.A. annual exhibitions. He has exhibited at the European Parliament in Brussels and at the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery in London. In 2005 he was invited to represent Ireland at the 5th Florence Biennale.

At Iontas 2003 his work was critically acclaimed by international curator Richard Torchia. At the Florence Biennale renowned art critic, art historian and director of the Biennale, John T. Spike likened Tony’s work to that of iconic American artist Fairfield Porter.

Tony’s work defies labels and ranges from social realism to traditional subjects but bright blue skies, stark contrasts and irregular perspectives are recurring style motifs. Tony is a member of Visual Artists Ireland and the United Arts Club.
