Artists Bio : Valerie Treacy

Valerie Treacy is primarily a still life painter in the medium of oil, though she is also known for her delicate watercolour work. Having graduated in Fine Art from the Crawford Municipal School of Art in Cork, Valerie subsequently spent twenty years teaching art before returning to her studio to pursue her own work on a fulltime basis.

Her compositions are generally on a small scale and in a restrained palette, technically exploring the capabilities of paint over different surfaces. The freedom of broad brushwork for oil sketches and alla prima work on course linen canvas and board, or the slower technique of glazing on more highly-worked compositions, are what facinate Valerie Treacy.

A tabletop in it's sparceness, the flow of space puncuated only by her chosen subject matter and their shadows, all lend a quiet meditative quality to the pace of the composition. Valerie Treacy in her Still Life work is acutely aware of the tensions and harmonies that at times bond or set these forms apart from one another and define a relationship beyond the physical. These subjects sound a contemporary note in a traditional genre as they merge in a dialogue between nature, craftsperson and painter.

Valerie Treacy whose work is held in many public and private collections and has exhibited widely, also works on private commissions.
