John Morris was born in Dublin in 1958. He has been painting since the late 1990’s. After he moved to Abbeyfeale, County Limerick he began to paint full-time. John took painting lessons from Brian Quinn after meeting him painting Plein Air in 1997.
John Morris with his distinctive style creates paintings that are about light and the effects of light on objects such as figures, water, landscape; they are about minute colour changes. Composition is important to him and he spends a lot of time getting it right before he starts to paint.
When he starts a painting, he makes a quick charcoal sketch working out the composition that most appeals to him. He mixes the main colours on the palette these can be adjusted as the painting evolves. Once the main colours are mixed and the composition is worked out, he starts to paint, quickly at first, then slowing as the painting becomes more resolved. Once he has either finished the painting or reached a point where he can go no further, he leaves it for another day. “This approach of working out the composition and colours has the advantage of helping me to paint quickly, and then hopefully the work will be fluid, spontaneous and not a bit laboured”.
John Morris has exhibited widely throughout Ireland and his work features in numerous private collections both national and international.
John Morris is listed in The Sixth Edition of 'ADAMS, A Buyers Guide to Irish Art'.
