Artist's Statement
Architectural constraints are reinvented when sunlight penetrates a space. New subdivisions of light and dark, warm and cool have the effect of energizing or calming the observer. I have tried to capture this experience in my new work. The private and personal space of domestic furniture takes on different energies as the light changes. The solid furniture is grounded on a shifting lattice of sunlight. The mood and palette alter with the time of day suggesting different personal relationships. Frequently we find that public spaces are artificially lit with cool, constant and emotionally void light but in the Gallery sunlight instantly changes the ambiance. The chance splash of sunlight through vertical panes painting a wall with the shadows of foliage or random branching of trees, the wave of heat inside glass or the glowing solar fretwork momentarily lighting the ground immediately influence the way we feel about ourselves and others.
Mary Clancy graduated from the Crawford College of Art and Design in 2007. She was awarded the Eli Lilly Purchase Prize 2007, the Ernst and Young Award 2007 and was the recipient of the Countess Markievicz Gold Medal for Painting from the Dublin Arts Society in 2004. Mary exhibited at The Royal Dublin Society Art Student Awards Exhibition in Dublin, August 2007, The Recent Grads Show, The Joan Clancy Gallery, Ring, Co. Waterford, August 2007 and The Fledglings Exhibition, The Lavit Gallery, Cork in September 2007. Her work was exhibited at the 2’ Square exhibition, The Lavit Gallery, Cork and Kinsale Arts Week 2008.
