Norman McCaig was born in Bangor, Co Down in 1929. He came from an artistic background and was interested in painting from his schooldays. He took up painting full-time after studying at Belfast College of Art, and later traveling to the Academy of Art Vavin in Paris. He became friends with Joseph Sefton who among other accomplishments painted stage and set designs for Edith Piaf and it was with Joseph that he held his first exhibition on the banks of the River Seine in the late 1940s.
